A man is defeated only when he no longer tries, and abandons himself.”

To those of you who walk restlessly

on the path of the conquest

of truth and wisdom.

I wish for you to be able to get out from this

as much as I did.

From: “The teaching of Don Juan” by Castaneda

“No. Anyone can try to become a man of knowledge;

very few men actually succeed, but that is only natural.

The enemies a man encounters

on the path of learning to become a man of knowledge

are truly formidable; most men succumb to them.”

“To be a man of knowledge has no permanence.

One is never a man of knowledge, not really.

Rather, one becomes a man of knowledge for a very brief instant,

after defeating the four natural enemies.”

“When a man starts to learn,

he is never clear about his objectives.

His purpose is faulty; his intent is vague.

He hopes for rewards that will never materialize,

for he knows nothing of the hardships of learning.

“He slowly begins to learn – bit by bit at first,

then in big chunks.

And his thoughts soon clash.

What he learns is never what he pictured,

or imagined, and so he begins to be afraid.

Learning is never what one expects.

Every step of learning is a new task,

and the fear the man is experiencing

begins to mount mercilessly, unyieldingly.

His purpose becomes a battlefield.

“And thus he has tumbled upon

the first of his natural enemies:

A terrible enemy – treacherous,

and difficult to overcome.

It remains concealed at every turn of the way,

prowling, waiting.

And if the man, terrified in its presence, runs away,

his enemy will have put an end to his quest.”

“What will happen to the man if he runs away in fear?”

“Nothing happens to him except that he will never learn.

He will never become a man of knowledge.

He will perhaps be a bully or a harmless, scared man;

at any rate, he will be a defeated man.

His first enemy will have put an end to his cravings.”

Once a man has vanquished fear,

he is free from it for the rest of his life because,

instead of fear, he has acquired clarity – a clarity of mind

which erases fear.

By then a man knows his desires;

he knows how to satisfy those desires.

He can anticipate the new steps of learning,

and a sharp clarity surrounds everything.

The man feels that nothing is concealed.

“And thus he has encountered his second enemy:

That clarity of mind, which is so hard to obtain,

dispels fear, but also blinds.

“It forces the man never to doubt himself.

It gives him the assurance he can do anything he pleases,

for he sees clearly into everything.

And he is courageous because he is clear,

and he stops at nothing because he is clear.

But all that is a mistake;

it is like something incomplete.

If the man yields to this make-believe power,

he has succumbed to his second enemy

and will fumble with learning.

He will rush when he should be patient,

or he will be patient when he should rush.

And he will fumble with learning

until he winds up incapable of learning anything more.”

“What becomes of a man who is defeated in that way, don Juan? Does he die as a result?”

“No, he doesn’t die.

His second enemy has just stopped him cold

from trying to become a man of knowledge;

instead, the man may turn

into a buoyant warrior, or a clown.

Yet the clarity for which he has paid so dearly

will never change to darkness and fear again.

He will be clear as long as he lives,

but he will no longer learn, or yearn for anything.”

“But what does he have to do to avoid being defeated?”

“He must do what he did with fear:

he must defy his clarity and use it only to see,

and wait patiently and measure carefully

before taking new steps;

he must think, above all,

that his clarity is almost a mistake.

And a moment will come when he will understand

that his clarity was only a point before his eyes.

And thus he will have overcome his second enemy,

and will arrive at a position

where nothing can harm him any more.

This will not be a mistake.

It will not be only a point before his eyes.

It will be true power.

“He will know at this point that the power

he has been pursuing for so long is finally his.

He can do with it whatever he pleases.

His wish is the rule.

He sees all that is around him.

But he has also come across his third enemy:

“Power is the strongest of all enemies.

And naturally the easiest thing to do is to give in;

after all, the man is truly invincible.

He commands; he begins by taking calculated risks,

and ends in making rules, because he is a master.

“A man at this stage hardly notices

his third enemy closing in on him.

And suddenly, without knowing,

he will certainly have lost the battle.

His enemy will have turned him

into a cruel, capricious man.”

“Will he lose his power?”

“No, he will never lose his clarity or his power.”

“What then will distinguish him

from a man of knowledge?”

“A man who is defeated by power

dies without really knowing

how to handle it.

Power is only a burden upon his fate.

Such a man has no command over himself,

and cannot tell when or how to use his ower.”

A man is defeated only when he no longer tries,

and abandons himself.”

“…If he gives in to fear he will never conquer it,

because he will shy away from learning

and never try again.

But if he tries to learn for years in the midst of his fear,

he will eventually conquer it

because he will never have

really abandoned himself to it.”

“How can he defeat his third enemy, don Juan?”

“He has to defy it, deliberately.

He has to come to realize

the power he has seemingly conquered

is in reality never his.

He must keep himself in line at all times,

handling carefully and faithfully

all that he has learned.

If he can see that clarity and power,

without his control over himself,

are worse than mistakes,

he will reach a point where everything is held in check.

He will know then when and how to use his power.

And thus he will have defeated his third enemy.

“The man will be, by then, at the end of his journey of learning,

and almost without warning

he will come upon the last of his enemies:

Old age!

This enemy is the cruelest of all,

the one he won’t be able to defeat completely,

but only fight away.

“This is the time when a man has no more fears,

no more impatient clarity of mind –

a time when all his power is in check,

but also the time when he has an unyielding desire to rest.

If he gives in totally to his desire to lie down and forget,

if he soothes himself in tiredness,

he will have lost his last round,

and his enemy will cut him down

into a feeble old creature.

His desire to retreat will overrule all his clarity,

his power, and his knowledge.

“But if the man sloughs off his tiredness,

and lives his fate through,

he can then be called a man of knowledge,

if only for the brief moment

when he succeeds in fighting off his last,

invincible enemy.

That moment of clarity, power,

and knowledge is enough.”

  1. Amen.

  2. Very nice write up, he is good up to a point but: but his believes and understanding what is the real-true spiritual existence have more whole in it than the Swiss cheese. His teaching surly not for those who really want to get out of the MEST Universe. His teaching is purely MEST related.. OLD AGE? DEATH? Silvia, no one succumbs to death no spiritual being do, DEATH the believes of death is a implanted material. Everything all those thoughts believe the persons have about age-aging, living dying wrinkles, of course this includes birth, being born maturing all those considerations-agreements are pertaining to the body. Being A body. The body comes out of a body; being born as a body has nothing to do with the spiritual being.
Spirits are not fabricated items not products, if one would die than one real would not be a spiritual being would they now? Bodies do not recall past lives only spirits can do that. But this you know.
About power, huge misconception, POWER TOO is a belief of having=ness. Power is only exist in the MEST Universe. It is a belief a havingness as in BE DO and therefore HAVE, but no more to that. If ONE HAVE SOMETHING THAN ONE SURLY HAVE MEST_CREATED A BELIEVE, THAN THAT IS JUST A MOCK-UP a item.
True power is not needed to be hold back checked controlled, being given up or given into, ETC. No one can give power to the spiritual being and no one can take power away from the spiritual being. Power the BELIEVING IN POWER is strictly a human-implanted item.
Power the thought of power is not existent in the Theta Universe, nor fear, nor knowledge nor having of anything. Thought, having something… not having something, being something or somebody strictly is agreements-considerations.. is Implanted Human havingness: is being human. And those thought believes begins here on this PLANET and ENDS HERE.

    • This is not something you take literally Eliz. It to be read between words… love u.

      • Silvia, little bug….. who can read between the lines and really understand ? i know that you can…. who else?
How mant view points on averidge perspon have on the similar or same subject? Or can cope with, handle? This is not to make you wrong because you are not wrong to view any subject you like. For otheres who believe in everithing what ever they read…
It is amusing how ones words most well intended is twisted into the most incradible nonsense and believed that is the truth.. Much love..as always….

    • Wow! As usual.

      • Elizabeth,

I think you really need to read Carlos Castaneda’s series of books to understand what he intends in the passage. There is far more wisdom in the concepts than a quick look reveals.
        Steve Sarocky

  3. I thought Tim Higgs was the plant who smeared your name?

  4. Good entry quotes. but continuous use of opposites or reversals to punch meaning home leans on hypnotic in my opinion. from one clacking tongue joining the others.

  5. NOTHINGNESS, You have asked for it Little BUG, with love
I have had few hours of solo auditing on clouds today.. The sessions are simply fantastic… totally un-real or accurately real?
From one cloud I picked up there was ‘”nothing”” in it but I did not believed that “nothingness” since in my reality the universe which we no longer view in the “now”= we tend to put into something: considerations like: it is in the past, all gone, belongs to yesterday, forgotten, not remembered, never happened and most cases we just pull an invisible curtain front of it and we say and we believe too “Out of sight: out of mind.” And we wash our hands and lean into a new game which “we say” we are playing in the NOW at this moment.
So I never believe that nothingness existed in that cloud, I was just facing that “nothingness” one more in new unit of time related to different reality. The session begins and that NOTHINGNESS has become a huge session.
This being who has believed he was nothing, moved into that state to get away from it all. That nothingness in the end of the session turned out to be a ”Huge cover up” so nothing could be detected for safety reasons that is believed, or noticed, observed, sensed from outside, therefore interfered with, or could not to be disturbed, being affected in any ways by others or taken away and destroyed, not- ised plus had few dozen other considerations beside those and one of them is the “meditative state”.
But the big cog. was the “IMPORTANCE” of the nothingness””. Huge reality of different kind. What was important because” if we are nothing, than we are spiritual beings”. Since “being nothing” than we are not Material- not beings of any kind: having things with different bodies-anchor points.
“”””””””””” That last consideration in the cog.. sort of made my heart jump.. Is it truly we believe that the being nothing is the spiritual state or we are made to believe that is the true state and in fact that is just an implanted state..”””””””””
PS: I am sure there will be a continual, cognition because I never believe that there is an end to something, that any cognition is a final cog: the last reality in existence in the Universe since the Universe is too big, infinite to have ending a final conclusion on any subject… Good day in Paradise, there is harmony in the Universe+ full of dog dodo…..hehehe.. I wonder when is the last lough one could be having?

    • Elizabeth, I reply here as you have closed the comments on your blog. No one does more to help me stretch my spiritual legs than you. More than anyone, YOU are my don Juan Matus because you give me both permission and encouragement to have courage and to explore my life and path.

(Explanation: ((Silvia will appreciate this)) Silvia has been reading and reporting on some books about Yaqui Indian sorcery written by Carlos Castaneda, an American author.

“Don Juan Matus” is a major figure in these books. Matus is described as a Yaqui Indian to whom Castaneda was first introduced at a bus depot in Yuma, Arizona in the early 1960s. He turns out to be a ‘Man of Knowledge’ who imparts much of his wisdom and clarity through his ‘connection’ with Castaneda, who writes about the experiences in his first book THE TEACHINGS OF DON JUAN, A YAQUI WAY OF KNOWLEDGE. The Knowledge is passed on to Castaneda by means of actual experiences, simple exercises and much patience on the part of both which ends in further transforming both characters’ view of the world. Carlos Castaneda never claimed Juan Matus to be a shaman and yet the actual existence of don Juan has been disputed by a handful of critics who claim his practices and beliefs are inconsistent with his alleged identification as a Yaqui shaman.

In JOURNEY TO IXTLAN, Don Juan is quoted as saying “No one knows where I am really from or who I am for certain.”

I really laugh at that last and it so totally reminds me of you because of the critics and criticism of your chosen path. I think the criticism just adds to your mystique.

  6. from Castaneda’s first book, THE TEACHINGS OF DON JUAN A YAQUI WAY OF KNOWLEDGE, “For me there is only the traveling on the paths that have heart, on any path that may have heart. There I travel, and the only worthwhile challenge for me is to traverse its full length. And there I travel—looking, looking, breathlessly.”

  7. Thanks old bean, [english-english expression]
If I really would be listening to what most of those who think of me like those big numbered auditors [CL 6-8 12’s] I would have caved in long time back and have shoot the body in the head by now. Since outside of Silvia [as a auditor and solo auditor] everyone 99%,thinks I am a nut also a squirrel, but bloody hell where are their cognitions written down in fact a whole blog is nothing but cognitions like mine? Chris me lad…. No one knows where I walk and who really I am and the knowledge gained through auditing.
In last 18 months I posted 170 major cognitions and equal amount or more I did not bothered to write up! You know the internet blogs more than I do, is there some place where WINS GALORE of the OT can be read? Do let me know if so, but I have a feeling I should not hold my breath… the body would expire pronto…..
The fun.. the insight, the regained abilities one can’t describe with words….
